If you don’t follow the JSchool on Twitter (@scrippsjschool) you might have missed the news about our SPJ chapter’s recent win (read INC’s article).

The chapter, which also received this award in 2005, has long had a reputation for embracing serious journalism. But from what I can tell, the members have a very good time in the process. And no, I don’t mean in the “party school” way.

SPJ members seem to thoroughly enjoy activities such as grammar competitions. They delight in hearing speakers talk about complex legal wrangling over information access issues. And they positively beamed after hearing a documentary maker discuss his film about media in the middle east.

Don’t believe me? Attend one of their meetings (held every Tuesday at 5 p.m. in Scripps Hall 111). Everyone is welcome.

I had the privilege of speaking to SPJ members just this week on the topic of the JSchool’s new semesters-based curriculum. The 90-seat auditorium was probably two-thirds full, with freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors seated side-by-side (great networking opportunity!). Little did they know the good news that was about to come their way about the national award.

Hats off, OU SPJ members and officers as you work to make the 2010-11 academic year just as successful.
