Meet PhD student Molly Yanity

by Michael Sweeney, Professor; Associate Director for Graduate Studies

First-year Ph.D. student Molly Yanity joins the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism from Seattle. For 12 years, Yanity wrote sports for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. After the newspaper closed in March 2009, Yanity decided to get back into academia with the hopes of passing some of her knowledge and experience to the young journalists whom she teaches.

The main focus of Yanity’s research is sports. She hopes to link her dissertation research to her passion to learn more about specific areas of the sports industry.

It seems that everything has come full circle for Yanity. She returns to the place where she was born and raised, but has spent the majority of her recent years away from Athens. The former sports reporter has lived on the West Coast while practicing her trade, with stints in San Diego, Huntington Beach and most recently, Seattle.

Yanity is proud to be a die-hard Pittsburgh Steelers fan, which can be tough living in a state with two professional football teams. She also has a 4-year-old dachshund named Kirby, who is almost always with her. One of Yanity’s favorite things about Athens is the $1 domestic bottles at Jackie O’s on Thursday nights, when many grad students gather for weekly informal talks that expand on the classroom lessons.
