A Proud Moment for Two Students

by Michael Sweeney, Professor; Associate Director for Graduate Studies

E.W. Scripps School of Journalism student Nick Piotrowicz had a triumph recently, as did his instructor, Scripps PhD student Molly Yanity.

Piotrowicz wrote a news-feature story in Yanity’s undergraduate sportswriting class about former Bobcat basketball player Gary Trent, “The Shaq of the MAC.” Trent led OU to the Preseason NIT title in 1994 and was drafted by the Portland Trailblazers of the NBA at the conclusion of his junior year in 1995. Piotrowicz wanted to get caught up on what happened to Trent in the intervening years, including why he’s not in the Ohio Hall of Fame.

The resulting class assignment became “Where’s the Beef?,” a bylined story published in the March 2011 edition of SLAM, a national magazine focused on basketball.

Yanity called the publication a “proud moment” for her student and for herself.

“Way to go, Nick!” said Yanity, a longtime sportswriter for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer who began her graduate studies at OU in 2009.

The graduate program in the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism allows grads students with professional experience to share their expertise in the classroom with undergraduate students. PhD students, such as Yanity, are expected to build their pedagogical portfolios as “teachers of record” in undergraduate classes while taking three years of advanced classes.
