Photography featured at Schuneman Symposium

The 2011 Schuneman Symposium will put photography front and center, featuring PhotoShelter founder Grover Sanschagrin and National Geographic photographer William Albert Allard. Sanschagrin received his degree in visual communication from OU in 1990.

Feedback from the 2009 and 2010 symposia sponsored by R. Smith and Patricia Schuneman indicated that the “Photography” part of the program was swamped by the “New Media” portion.

In a 2009 Scripps College of Communication story announcing the original gift, “Smitty,” as he is known, said the purpose of the symposium is to “to be a catalyst in students’ futures.”

In addition, he wanted to make sure journalism students get a strong dose of appreciation for visual media.

“We’d been thinking about making the gift for two years, and, because the media industry is changing so fast, we felt this was something we needed to do now,” his wife, Pat, added.

Terry Eiler, School of Visual Communication director, served on the planning committee for the 2011 program, which helped beef up the photography component of the symposium.
