Linke (BSJ ’41) still making his mark on the JSchool

by Robert Stewart, Director

I recently had the good fortune to spend a week vacationing on the Big Island of Hawaii, home to long time friend and JSchool alumnus Dick Linke.

Linke graduated back in 1941 and went on to one of the great Hollywood PR careers of his era, managing the careers of Andy Griffith, Jim Nabors, and several other entertainers. My goal was to interview Linke for our YouTube channel. Fortunately, YouTube has bumped up our video uploads to two gigs max, allowing me to post this 50 minute interview.

In the interview, Linke discusses his days at “Ohio U” and how he almost dropped out after realizing how unprepared he was for college. After overcoming those struggles the New Jersey native fell deeply in love with Athens, even weeping when it was time to leave town after graduation.

Even at the top of his career, Linke managed to return to more than 50 homecomings. His generosity has extended to the donation of the largest single scholarship available to upperclassmen, the Richard O. Linke Scholarship.

NOTE: one of my favorite stories in this interview is about the train rides between Athens and New Jersey (around the 15 minute mark).
