2011 top graduating JSchool seniors

Today I have posted a photo of the 2011 top graduating JSchool seniors — complete with caps and gowns — on the front of our website.

Every year the faculty select top graduating seniors for our sequences, plus an overall top graduating senior. We announce them at our awards banquet. Here’s the script I read at this year’s program.

Here’s another image from the same photo shoot, which you can click on and download.

We start with the outstanding senior in Advertising.

Jenny not only excels in the classroom, but has been celebrated for her good work outside as well. She has been active with the Ohio University Alumni Association and she was recognized by the Ohio University’s Women’s Center as a female leader in the community.

According to her professors, she is nothing but a pleasure to have in class. And her fellow students feel the same.

Ladies and gentlemen, the outstanding advertising senior for 2011, Jennifer Bak.

The outstanding broadcast senior, Will Tapper.

The Outstanding Carr Van Anda senior, Sarah Holt.

In her honors thesis, Savannah Aepli looks at how American media covered Beijing’s air pollution and clean-up efforts for the 2008 Olympic Games.

She interned with China Daily, where she set up and maintained its social media.
Savannah has also been involved in a number of leadership roles, including President of the Chinese Language Student Association, and host for the Chinese New Year celebrations for two years.

An avid music lover, she has been a member of several choruses on campus as well as the Ohio University Symphony Orchestra and Woodwind Quintet.

The Outstanding Journalism HTC Senior is Savannah Aepli, who will graduate Summa Cum Laude.

Natalie was awarded a prestigious American Society of Magazine Editors internship and was assigned to intern at Real Simple magazine in New York City. Natalie also has worked as a campus reporter for the Athens News for the last four years, receiving praise from editor Terry Smith for her hard work and consistent reporting excellence.

Faculty know Natalie as quiet and unassuming but someone who always works at the highest level. And she will graduate at the highest level, Summa Cum Laude.

The outstanding magazine senior, Natalie Knoth.

The outstanding News Editorial Senior this year has made writing his passion since his freshman year.

Erich was instrumental in bringing documentary filmmaker Josh Fox to campus, orchestrating class visits and the screening of the acclaimed documentary, Gasland.

And Erich was one of our prestigious interns in the Washington, D.C. Scripps Foundation Wire Bureau, writing stories that were published in news outlets around the country.

Erich will graduate Summa Cum Laude.

The outstanding News Editorial senior, Erich Hiner.

All you have to do is take one look at the design work of our next recipient to see why she was selected as our top 2011 online journalism senior.

The outstanding online senior, Alyse Kordenbrock.

Everyone who knows our top PR senior knows not to be fooled by his quiet, humble demeanor. The faculty describe him as a powerhouse of competence.

Devin has been recognized by the Central Ohio professional PRSA chapter with an Outstanding Graduate Award of Excellence. And he will graduate from Scripps Magna Cum Laude.

The outstanding public relations senior, Devin Hughes.

And with all of that, Evan has still found time to serve the school as a Scripps Ambassador for the last two years.

It is with great pride that the faculty of the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism names Evan Millward overall outstanding senior for the class of 2011.

NOTE: check back on the sequence pages in the coming days for video interviews of each top graduating senior.
