Hitchens (BSJ ’81) receives alum award during reunion for The Post
by Robert Stewart, Director
When a group of Posties who graduated in the late 1970s and early ’80s gather in Athens, they meet at the Union.
That’s where I first met Theresa Hitchens, who was voted alum of the year a couple years ago but had yet to pick up the ward. That’s because she lives in Switzerland, where she directs the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research.
I was sitting with a half dozen alums from The Post when a whirlwind of a woman blew into the Union. Someone said, “here’s our Geneva connection.” Realizing that we don’t have many alumni in Geneva, Switzerland, I quickly figured out that this was THE Theresa Hitchens, with whom I’d only had email contact when we tried to schedule her trip to receive the Horton award.
Sure enough, it was Theresa, who was in town to join about 20 other alumni who had thoroughly bonded some thirty years ago while working at The Post. I suggested that we present her award to her in front of her former classmates and colleagues from The Post, which was entirely agreeable to her. We agreed that the following day’s pool-side get together at the OU Inn would be the suitable event for the presentation.
