Documentary maker visits JSchool classes

This week we’re hosting Phil Rees, a London-based documentary maker who has produced programs for BBC, Al Jazeera, and a number of other outlets.

He currently works for UPIU.com, which offers journalism students around the world the opportunity to publish work with the help of one of the company’s mentors. Students in my JFreshmen class last fall were some of the first to upload video stories to UPIU.com. Rees is working with this year’s JFreshmen as well, but also will mentor any student interested in producing a video story for UPIU.com.

This morning Phil spoke to students in my JOUR 101 class about documentary as journalism. Later today he’ll speak in two television news reporting classes, and then meet with students in the Students for Global Media and Diversity organization. Tomorrow (Friday), he’ll talk to my JFreshmen class and meet with them individually for the better part of the afternoon. The result of all of this, we hope, is that our students will get their work up to a level that can be seen not only on UPIU.com, but on the professional-level UPI service.

One footnote: E.W. Scripps was the founder of UPI back in 1907. Read more about the history of the news agency.
