Completing a Minor at Ohio University

While completing the requirements of your major, you may elect to complete one or more of the minors offered by the academic programs of Ohio University. Minors are not required, but they offer students the opportunity to complete a university-recognized concentration of study outside their majors. Successfully completed minors are listed on your official Ohio University transcript after you graduate.

To declare your intent to complete a minor, go to Student Services in the Dean's Office, 497 Radio-Television Building, where you will complete and sign a form. From that point on, your DARS will begin to track your progress toward completion of the minor. To earn a minor, you must complete approved courses in your chosen area.

Note: Declaring your intent to complete a minor does not make the minor a requirement for graduation. The minor remains optional; if you do not finish the requirements by the time you graduate, you simply do not earn the minor.

Confusion sometimes arises between a minor and a "specialization" in the School of Journalism. Minors are optional. Specializations are not. The specialization requirement reflects an understanding that students need to develop competence in one or more areas outside their majors, areas that complement and relate well to career goals. Although completion of these requirements is not formally recognized on the transcript, courses to fulfill any of these requirements also may count toward completion of a minor.

For example: a journalism student who has declared geography and geology as specializations is required to complete at least 16* credit hours in each of those departments. Because a minor in geography requires 28 credit hours, that student would need an additional 14 hours to earn the minor. In addition, the required hours for a minor usually come from an approved list of classes; you cannot take any courses that you wish. Specific requirements for a minor are listed in the Ohio University Undergraduate Catalog under "Minors."

*As of the 2007 catalog of entry. Previously students were required to complete 18 credit hours in each of two departments.
