Surin Chung joined the faculty in the fall of 2018. He has diverse academic and professional backgrounds. Chung earned his Ph.D. in Journalism specializing in strategic communication at the University of Missouri Columbia. Chung also built his professional career at MSL Group, one of the top five global PR agencies, in South Korea. As an account executive, he undertook various online and offline PR assignments for global clients such as Singapore Tourism Board, McDonald’s, and PUMA.

Ph.D., Journalism, University of Missouri Columbia; M.S. Journalism and Communication, Iowa State University; B.S. Mass Communication, Sogang University.

Research Interests:

Research interests are rooted in strategic communication with an emphasis on public relations (PR), crisis and risk communication, and digital media. In particular, his research deals with how effectively an organization can deliver a crisis message to relieve publics’ negative evaluations. Another stream of his research is to investigate how publics perceive uncertain risks and what drives them to communicate differently under uncertainty. Chung has published his studies in peer-reviewed journals such as Public Relations Review, International Journal of Business Communication, and Communication Research Reports among others.

Teaching Interests:

Teaching interests include strategic communication, public relations, crisis management, social media campaign and analytics, and quantitative research methods. At OU, he teaches Introduction to Strategic Communication (JOUR 2500), Advertising and Public relations Research and Theory (JOUR 3400), and Advertising and Public Relations Writing (JOUR 3700).
