EXPERIENCE: Director, E.W. Scripps School of Journalism (1986-1998). Associate dean for graduate studies and research, Manship School of Mass Communication, Louisiana State University (2001-04). Sig Mickelson/CBS professor of mass communication, LSU (2001-present). Reporter, Charleston Daily Mail and the Associated Press; consultant, USIS, Mitchell College of Advanced Education (Australia) and Georgia Institute for Public Affairs (Republic of Georgia); president of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication (1992-93); vice president for campus chapter affairs of the Society of Professional Journalists (1976-79); Freedom Forum fellow at the Media Studies Center in New York (1998-99). Received the Wells Memorial Key, SPJ’s highest national award for service (1985) and was named an honorary alumnus of Ohio University (2000); editor, Newspaper Research Journal (1988-2000).
