Biography

M.A., Journalism, Ohio State University, 1968; B.A., Radio-TV News, San Francisco State University, 1967. Joined the Scripps faculty in September 2002 after 20 years at CNN (one of the original employees), where he worked variously as reporter/producer, anchor, and writing teacher. As a reporter, he specialized in backgrounders and historical stories/series, including the 365-part 1999 series This Day/This Century. Also worked either on air or as writer/producer at NBC News in New York and Rome, Italy, Visnews Ltd (now Reuters Television) in London, Television News, Inc., KIRO-TV Seattle, KTVU (TV) Oakland CA, KBHK-TV San Francisco, KSFO (AM) San Francisco, KIDD (AM) Monterey CA, and WOSU-AM/FM Columbus OH. Taught a two-day TV news workshop in Shanghai, China in October 2000; script editor/coach for Shanghai Television and China Central Television during the October 2001 APEC summit. His 2001 The New Georgians documentary on the growth of the state’s Latino population – produced by the University of Georgia for Georgia Public Television -- was a finalist in the Telly awards competition.
