About the Institute for International Journalism

The institute is part of the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, carrying out many of the school's international initiatives. Its goals are to prepare students to work as international journalists, support research on topics related to international journalism, enhance communication among journalists, students and media scholars, and cooperate with global partners in journalism education.

The IIJ is now home to the International Communication Research Journal, a publication of the International Communication Division of AEJMC.


The Global Spotlight

THE GLOBAL SPOTLIGHT (see list below) is an international current affairs e-news magazine with feature stories originally investigated, reported, edited, and produced by students of the Foreign Correspondence class. Launched in 2009, the e-news magazine will be published four times a year by the Institute for International Journalism at Ohio University. Click on the link above to access our e-news magazine.

The IIJ administers the Study of the United States Institute (SUSI) for Journalism and Media scholars, which is funded by an annual renewable grant from the U.S. Department of State's Study of the U.S. Branch in the Office of Academic Exchange Programs." Read more

Scholars Reflect on Success of SUSI and Post-Institute Activities

The Study of the US Institute (SUSI) on Journalism and Media has called Athens, Ohio its home base for the last five years. Offered in the summer, this program brings 18 scholars from 18 different countries to the United States to experience journalism, media and culture. From visiting media outlets in Atlanta, Georgia the District of Columbia and San Francisco, to seeing a unique sector of American culture by visiting the Amish in Holmes County, Ohio, last summers SUSI scholars had a full schedule of travel and experiences not to mention lectures and workshops designed to share journalistic practices and perspectives cross-culturally.

IIJ Receives Federal Grant, Partners with African Leaders Initiative

The E.W. Scripps School of Journalisms Institute for International Journalism has embarked on a new international training project to provide guidance, consultation and tools to the young and emerging African leaders in sponsored by Citizen Exchanges-Professional Fellows Division in the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State.

IIJ Student Association

Students for Global Media and Diversity (SGMD) promotes awareness of diversity and enhances cross-cultural communication among students at Ohio University. SGMD aims to foster an appreciation of the trials, tribulations, and triumphs of international journalists, their media systems, and the governments within which they operate. SGMD provides students with a comfortable environment within which they can socialize and network about international affairs. They learn about the role of media in a globalized community. Membership in this organization consists of enrolled Ohio University undergraduate and graduate domestic students and international students from all over the world. SGMD also welcomes alumni and former fellows of the Wilhelm Foreign Correspondence Internship to participate in the organization's activities. Enrollment and membership is free.
