  • Event calendar and scholarships (Article)
  • By Lydia Gutierrez

The school’s event calendar is updated weekly with organization meetings, lectures, organization social events and everything else related to the Scripps School. When you click on an event, in most cases, a description of the meeting or event is given. You can also find contact information in case you have questions about the event or meeting. If your organization’s meetings and events aren’t on the calendar and you want them promoted on the site, e-mail me at lg163504@ohio.edu, and I will get them on the calendar ASAP.

If you didn’t get a chance to pick up Scripps Notes and you accidentally deleted the e-mail before you read it, you can look on the Web site. There is also a listing of additional internships to look into. A nice site feature is that all opportunities, internships and paid positions are listed with detailed job descriptions. For example, the internship listing for The Alcohol, Drug and Mental Health Board states that it is a public relations internship. This way you know before clicking if the internship is something you’re interested in. Contact information is provided as well.

Don’t forget about local opportunities. Those interested can find real journalism experience in Athens. Currently, there are opportunities for public relations, writing and advertising. And just like Scripps Notes, there is a description and contact information.

Need money to pay for school? Who doesn’t. If you look on scrippsjschool.org, you can find under “current students,” a link to scholarship information. There is information on two scholarships that are awarded to incoming freshmen. So upperclassmen, feel free to pass that information along to your younger friends who plan to attend Scripps. To apply for scholarships from the JSchool, you must fill out the application that can be found on the site.

Be sure to check out the Robert Baker Scholarship, George Starr Lasher Living Legacy Scholarship and the John R. Wilhelm Foreign Correspondence Internships to see if you meet the requirements. Our Web site also provides other scholarships that have deadlines coming up. So be sure to keep track of the deadlines and apply. This money needs to go somewhere, so apply and get that money!

  • Blogs on scrippsjschool.org (Article)
  • By LYDIA GUTIERREZ

Blogs are becoming more and more popular every day. People are writing blogs that cover a variety of topics: celebrity gossip, current events and daily lives. For almost any topic, there is most likely a blog about it somewhere in cyberspace. The School of Journalism Web site features blogs that are written by students, alumni, and faculty. Professor Mark Tatge, who understands the importance of blogging, has taken blogging to a new level by continuously updating his blog for his classes. "Blogs are drastically altering the way people communicate and process information," he said. "The introduction of blogs, in some cases, has been very positive. There is certainly more information, more analysis, and more historical accounts of what is or is not going on in our society. So this contributes or furthers the free flow of information." There are many topics to blog about and people are utilizing this technology to voice their opinions and thoughts. According to Tatge, there are currently more than 100 million blogs, which equates to one blog for every three people in the U.S. After learning more about blogs, many J-school students may be curious about how to start writing a blog. If you are interested, e-mail Professor Stewart at stewartr@ohio.edu with your prospective blog topic.

Another blog is "From the Front Office." This blog is about the events going on at Scripps, and features students who are being recognized around campus and in the journalism field. For example, the posting online now is an article from Yahoo Sports about Scripps freshman Allie LaForce. The hope is that this will be updated often. Keep doing great things and hopefully you will be featured soon. The blog this week also features a "Media Industry News" section. This includes articles and blogs from people other than Scripps faculty, students and alumni. Topics cover subjects related to the media industry. The feed is continuous, so you can be sure to get the latest information. To stay on top of the info you can subscribe to the RSS feed as well.

  • Learn how to use RSS feeds (Article)
  • By LYDIA GUTIERREZ

I have told you about a few of the features of the JSchool Web site. To take full advantage of the school’s new site you need to get up-to-speed on RSS. RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. It’s a Web "feed" format used to "push" or publish updated content like blogs, news headlines, and pod casts. The benefit of RSS is that it allows you to stay up-to-date with your favorite sites and is easier than having to check the site all the time. To use RSS, you need to get software called an "RSS Reader." Using the software, you can subscribe to a feed by clicking on the RSS icon, triggering the subscription process. I know it probably seems a little confusing, so let’s go step-by-step using the JSchool site. Let’s say that you want to subscribe to the JSchool’s events calendar so that you’ll get new listings immediately. Click on the "rss subscription" link (or the XML button) and it will show you the results of the feed. You can subscribe to the feed using a variety of applications: live bookmarks, Bloglines, Yahoo! or Google. Bloglines keeps all your feeds together and you can browse right to your Bloglines site when you want to see the updates. RSS is cool because you can filter what you want and don’t want. Going to the JSchool site and checking the events calendar or blogs is nice; however, if you subscribe to the RSS feed for sections such as the events calendar, internships or local opportunities, you don’t have to bother with the parts of the site that aren’t of interest to you. Creating an account on a site like Bloglines doesn’t take long at all either. You just need to enter your e-mail address and create a password. Any time you click on "rss subscription" just be sure to change the drop down menu to Bloglines and then you will get all the information you want right on that Web page. All of the features on the JSchool site that are updated frequently are available for RSS subscription.

  • Use the site for scheduling needs (Article)
  • By LYDIA GUTIERREZ

People get so excited for scheduling but it can be hard to decide what classes to take when there are so many. As you check the status of class enrollment on the university Web site, don’t forget to browse over to scrippsjschool.org to find out information about the professors who will be teaching your classes. You also can find a description of required courses on the site under the "current students" and "undergrad requirements" section. The "faculty" feature on the site allows you to learn more about your professors. In some cases, a video is available so you can see them talk about different subjects and see what they look like. (Not all the biographies have the video feature, though, so you may have to snoop around Scripps if you really are interested in their appearance.) Also, if you don’t see a video profile for a professor and would like to offer to produce one, e-mail Professor Bob Stewart at stewartr@ohio.edu. The site lets you know what the professors teach, their contact information and also their educational and work experience, found in their biography. This is a nice little feature so you don’t go into class not knowing anything about your professor. Also, you can learn more about the requirements for the JSchool if you are hesitant to ask for help. There is even a link that will take you to the undergraduate catalog where you can find courses listed by number and their official descriptions. This site is also a great place to find information on the master’s or doctoral programs. And don’t forget about scholarships featured under "current students." There is plenty of information on how you can get money to pay for your education.

  • Introduction to JSchool Web site (Article)
  • By Lydia Gutierrez

Who knew the J-School had a useful Web site? I sure didn’t until I got my current PACE job as Scripps Special Events Assistant. When I was told that one of my responsibilities would be to help Prof. Bob Stewart with some things on the site, I thought to myself, “Wait, there’s a Web site?” Now, I have perfected the “art” of adding and editing the events calendar and have even dabbled in blogging. The site has a ton of information that I would have loved to have had when I arrived here at Scripps. I find myself using some of the site’s features and often enter just to browse around. But, maybe I’m partial too, as I am responsible for some of the content. The site offers a lot for prospective students, current students and alumni. They can check out event listings on the calendar, find the next classes they need to take in their sequences, and look at the profile of the professors they will have next quarter. The site also features Scripps Notes, local opportunities, scholarships, and internships. Everything is right at your fingertips in one convenient location: http://scrippsjschool.org. Not only is the info right there, but the site is equipped with RSS (Really Simple Syndication) and you get only the information you want delivered right to you. (More on that in an upcoming article.) In the following weeks you can read about the coolest features of scrippsjschool.org in Scripps Notes. But for now, browse the site for yourself and send feedback and suggestions to stewartr@ohio.edu. Also, you can send information about upcoming organizational events and meetings to me, at lg163504@ohio.edu, and help make the site even more informative.

  • About Tatge’s Media Works course (video)
  • How does the national media really work? We know what the textbooks say. But this Fall, E.W. Scripps Visiting Professional Mark Tatge will give students a window into the workings at newsrooms at some of the nation’s top publications -- the Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Business Week, Fortune, the New York Times.

In an attempt to influence the media, companies spend hundreds of millions of dollars on bad advertising, mindless PR releases and crisis planning. Much of it represents money poured down the drain. This course explores the reasons why corporate America has yet to understand how journalists think and how they do their jobs. We will explore the consequences and possible solutions to this perennial problem, a situation that threatens to only get worse with advances in technology.

In this video Tatge talks about the "Media Works" course (J492 A09) he is teaching in the fall.

  • Your Family Games (writing)
  • Do you love video games? Do you wish that others shared this love? Now is your chance to help spread understanding, awareness and love of video game to all generations.

Your Family Games (yourfamilygames.com) is designed to be an online resource for parents, so that they can better learn about their child’s hobby of video games and gain a better understanding of video game culture. It goes beyond teaching parents how to pronounce "pwn," and informs them of what type of gaming experience their child will encounter when they pick up a game.

YFG welcomes anyone with an interest in video games to join and help write wire content - whether that is game reviews, holiday previews, buying guides or game industry news. YFG’s goal is to have this content ready to present for the holiday season. Reviews for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC are especially needed. Web design help also appreciated.

NOTE: YFG cannot provide staff with video games to review; staff members will not be forced/asked to purchase video games for review, but can simply use games they already own.
