Burkhardt heading to Ecuador on Wilhelm program
Gail Burkhardt, a double major in journalism and Spanish, recently was awarded with the John R. Wilhelm Foreign Correspondence Internship, at the Scripps Award Banquet on April 28.
In this video, the senior from Toledo, Ohio explains how she developed an interest in international journalism and what she expects to find in Ecuador. Burkhardt also explains how studying abroad in Toledo, Spain, as a sophomore, has prepared her for such an experience. In the final segments, Burkhardt reflects on her four years the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism and how the school has shaped her and how she has given back.
Burkhardt will travel to Quito, Ecuador, this summer and report for the daily newspaper, “Hoy” (which means “today” in Spanish). Burkhardt’s future goal is to write for a bilingual newspaper in the United States and plans to utilize this opportunity towards achieving that ultimate goal.
During Winter Quarter, Burkhardt was a student in Professor Yusuf Kalyango’s foreign correspondence class and will be one of four students to leave the comforts of home for a three-month internship while reporting abroad.
