Job Description

The Scripps Howard Visiting Professional position is a teaching and mentoring opportunity for mid-career journalists or strategic communication professionals who want to spend a year working with talented students and faculty in the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism on the beautiful campus of Ohio University. Applications are now being accepted for the 2017-2018 academic year.

Launched in 1993, the Scripps Howard Visiting Professional position has been held by renowned foreign correspondents, Pulitzer-winning journalists, award-winning magazine editors, and accomplished media executives. Past recipients have included White House reporter Helen Thomas, famed AP correspondent Terry Anderson, war correspondent Kate Webb, and syndicated columnist Leonard Pitts Jr. Several past SHVP recipients remained on the faculty in subsequent years or went on to secure faculty positions at other universities.

Scripps Howard Visiting Professionals will teach existing courses or in special circumstances develop special-topic courses of their own. As faculty members, SHVP recipients have full access to Ohio University’s academic and support resources during their appointments, making the SHVP appointment an ideal time for recipients to work on books or other research or creative projects.

The E.W. Scripps School of Journalism is among the top journalism schools in the United States, with a typical enrollment of about 800 undergraduate students and a permanent full-time faculty of 25 professors and instructors. The school’s four-year curriculum blends media skills training with conceptual courses in professional ethics, media law, and media analysis. J-School students at Ohio University are very active in co-curricular media work on campus and in the greater community, with nearly two dozen media outlets to choose from. We also have award-winning student chapters of the Society of Professional Journalists, the Public Relations Student Society of America, and OU Advertising Association. The vast majority of our graduates get jobs in their chosen fields within three months of graduation. Graduates have earned 14 Pulitzer Prizes and many others have been similarly recognized for their journalistic achievements.
