Chillicothe Gazette Seeking Breaking News Reporter

This reporter covers all breaking news with urgency and accuracy with the goal of always being first to report important developing news on our digital platforms, including a heavy focus on video from scenes. This reporter must be competitive and dedicated to accuracy to allow for building a “must-follow” brand for readers interested in breaking news coverage in the market. This requires listening to police scanners, constantly scanning and leveraging social media, making phone calls, seeking out eyewitnesses, tracking court dockets for key cases and demanding public records, including videos. This reporter must be capable of posting error-free basic stories to our digital platforms, including sending push alerts and pushing content to social media. This reporter constantly seeks to avoid publishing boring traditional content in favor of ideas that will connect with our 25-45 target audience. This reporter should be able to excel in a variety of digital tasks, from going live at a news scene to scouring social media for tidbits on a trending topic. This reporter should be able to effectively write for a digital audience, know their way around social media, be able to collaborate with a team and not be afraid to bring big ideas to the table.


•Serve as a curious, assertive and energetic journalist who jumps to report on breaking news, trending/hot topics.

•Break news for digital audiences and are the primary on-scene reporter to cover stories as they develop. The ability to report quickly and accurately from the field is essential.

•Solid news judgment and the ability to think and respond quickly in high-pressure situations.

•Grow your digital audience by producing reliable reports, frequent updates and exclusive details.

•Connect with your audience - through social media, in your writing and on camera.


•Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communication, or similar.

•3+ years of reporting at a news outlet or equivalent media.

•Source-building, video and other digital-focused skills are a must.

•Proven ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment;

•Commitment to develop and maintain sources;

•Adept at using social media to tell stories, engage readers, and cover breaking news;

•Ability to meet deadlines, take initiative, receive constructive feedback and work as part of a team yet still show individual initiative
