Loren J. Hortin Scholarship winner combines love of sports and writing
Junior Steve Gartner is seizing any journalism opportunities that come his way.
Gartner, a Carr Van Anda major from Cincinnati, was recently awarded the Loren Joseph Hortin Memorial scholarship. The award honors a professor who taught at Scripps for about 20 years.
“I was sports editor of my high school newspaper for two years and I worked for the Cincinnati Post as a stringer junior and senior years of high school,” Gartner said.
Gartner has also interned with the Cincinnati Enquirer in the sports department as a stringer. This summer he will intern with MLB.com covering the Cincinnati Reds. To be able to intern doing something he loves is a dream come true, he said.
“I’ll go to all the home games and write the articles and sidebars,” he said.
When it comes to getting his education at Scripps, Gartner said he puts in as much work as he wants to get out of his experiences.
“There are so many opportunities to get involved in and Scripps encourages you to get involved,” he said. “You can either get nothing out of your four years here or you can try to meet everybody you can. That’s an important factor.”
Gartner said that his dream job would be to work as a writer for ESPN.com, but the only way to get there is through hard work and dedication.
“Don’t sit back and let someone get ahead of you,” he said. “You have to put yourself out there from the beginning. You need to get your foot in the door right away and you’ll be set.”
