<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Alternative Channel is a television-over-internet news channel: independent, user generated and pluralist. They are now offering The 2007 International Citizen Journalist Contest. If you have a news story worth telling and can tell it through video, Alternative Channel wants to hear about it.</p>

<p>
There is $100,000 in prizes in five different categories:</p>

<p>
Best subject (English language), Best subject (French language), best subject (Spanish language), Best Alternative News Channel International News Subject, Audience Choice award</p>

<p>
The key words here are persuasion, values, message, relevance and novelty. Entries must take the form of a video that is one minute 30 seconds to six minutes in length.</p>

<p>
Submit your videos on www.alternativechannel.tv before the deadline: Nov. 15. The Alternative Channel will nominate their top eight favorites in each category. Polls close Nov. 30. A jury made up of professional journalists will choose the three winners in each category and prizes will be awarded Dec. 6.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Fox News announces its 5th Annual Fox News Channel College Challenge. This is a nationwide competition for undergraduate juniors and seniors majoring in journalism, broadcast journalism, communications or an equivalent. </p>

<p>
The Challenge requires teams of two-four students to research, write, produce and submit an objective broadcast news story from a list of provided topics. A panel from Fox News Channel, who are integral in the news gathering, production and presentation of news programming, will judge the entries.</p>

<p>
The winning team will receive the following:</p>

<p>
A $10,000 scholarship shared amongst the team members</p>

<p>
A $10,000 matching grant to the winning team’s school</p>

<p>
A trip to New York City to appear on Fox News Channel</p>

<p>
An internship at Fox News Channel for juniors or an entry-level job interview for seniors at Fox News Channel</p>

<p>
Information on the competition can be found on www.foxnews.com/collegechallenge/. Students must enter no later than Oct. 31, and all tape entries must be postmarked by Dec. 31.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[Editor &amp; Publisher invites you to enter its annual Photos of the Year contest. The deadline is Sept. 21, 2007. The Grand Prize Winner will receive $1,000 and a Canon EOS-1D Mark III digital SLR camera. You can submit photos that have been published in a newspaper or on a newspaperâ€™s website since October 1, 2006. 

Categories include News (Spot/General), Features, Sports and Multiple Images/Photo Essay. Fees are $35 for a single entry and $60 for a photo essay/series. Entries are broken down into circulation groups: More than 250,000; 100,000-249,999; 25,000-99,999; less than 25,000.

<title>Newspaper Guild-CWA offers Barr Award</title>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[ Newspaper Guild-CWA announces the David S. Barr Award for student journalists.

The David S. Barr Award is intended to recognize one high school and one college student for their journalistic achievement and to encourage young journalists to focus on issues of social justice. It is named after David S. Barr, who for a quarter of a century served as The Newspaper Guildâ€™s general counsel, mentor, role model and institutional memory.

The competition is open to all high school students, including those enrolled in vocational, technical or special education programs; and to all part-time or full-time college students, including those in community colleges and in graduate programs.

The amount of the award is $500 for the high school winner and $1,500 for the college winner.

No more than one entry per contestant is permitted. Included with the entry should be a brief summary of the work submitted. One original copy of the entry published or broadcast must be submitted with four photocopies. Failure to supply all required documents will result in ineligibility. A signed official application form (on the back) must be attached to each copy of each entry.

Judging will be conducted by a panel in Washington, D.C. including a journalist, an academic, a labor lawyer and a member of the Barr family.

All entries must be of work published or broadcast between Jan. 1, 2006 and Dec. 31, 2006 that helped to right a wrong; correct an injustice; or promoted justice and fairness. 

All entries must be postmarked by no later than Jan. 26, 2007.

The awards will be presented May 3, 2007 at the annual Freedom Award Banquet in Washington, D.C. Barr winners will be provided with transportation and hotel lodging to attend the banq]]></content:encoded>
